Cookie Management Tool

Working in the industry and all the hype about GDPR in 2018, it still surprises me when I see a website without a Cookie Consent Tool, as is in the EU a Cookie Consent Management Tool is a requirement for web owners, this is not just a transparency practice, it is a mandate.

The question is website owners do you know what a Cookie Consent Management tool is and why do you need it?

First let me explain what a ‘cookie’ is. A cookie is a piece of data from a website that is stored within a web browser that the website can retrieve at a later time. It’s a way for a website to remember you, your preferences, and your habits online

A cookie consent management tool is a web application or SaaS (software as a service) software that manages how a website processes the collection and storage of a user’s consent regarding their data through the usage of a website.

Any Cookie Consent Management Tool needs to provide clarity to any user that visits the website about how the tracking process is used on the website either through cookies or any other method that handles user data, it also needs to inform properly what type of data is collected and what it is going to be used for.

A Cookie Consent Management Tool should record visitor consent and provide methods on how to deal with requests from users such as alterations to any data collected through the website, including the removal of it.

Nowadays the GDPR (EU’s General Data Protection Regulation) demands that any visitor of a website needs to be well informed of the tracking they might be subject to. Also giving them the clear ability to opt-out.

It’s important to highlight that not having explicit permission or even a proper description of the data collected might result in fines, which can be really high. In 2021 there was a big case in which Amazon was fined approx. €700 million. This is, of course, a specific case.

There are plenty of solutions that allow website owner’s to handle their website cookies but it is important to know what type of information and rules are required, as well as which to avoid having in your website. Just installing a cookie management tool does not make you compliant with GDPR and you always need guidance.
